Hot Pot

Last Thursday, the mister and I and a few friends kicked off the lunar new year…The year  of the rabbit with some hot pot. My friend Kiki organized this dinner outing. We all met up in Chinatown at Grand Sichuan International for some yummy Chinese food. The tradition is to eat food that hasthe color of what one would like for the new year. We ate some green baby bok choy for $$ and also lots of red hot sauce for love. Although, we did eat white noodles, it’s important to stay away from white foods as this is a symbol of death. As you can see from our spread we had tons of sauces, soy sesame, peanut sauce and soy ginger. One side of the pot had a clear broth and the other had a red sauce. The hot side was filled with a ton of hot chili . . .

Wattstax

In the summer of 1972 over 100,000 African Americans gathered together in the Los Angeles  Coliseum for a music festival which commemorated the seventh anniversary of the Watts Riots. Carla Thomas (pictured above) Isaac Hayes and The Staple singers were among the many performers. This doc is a compilation of all the musical performances. It also captures the audience’s experience. For those of you who read this blog and live outside the states, it’s Black History month. You can read more about the Watt’s Festival here.

Happy Weekend…

Beet Soup

I ate the last of the beet soup for lunch today. It was so good. There’s red beans, chick peas and kale in here. We had some sourdough bread to got with it, toasted and lathered with lots of butter. I was a vegetarian for five years and still enjoy eating vegetarian dishes. This one is actually vegan. What can I say we are a beet loving household. One of my favorite ways to cook beets is to roast them in the oven and then douse them in balsamic vinegar and honey. Hope to share more of what goes on in my kitchen with you.Be it known, I am now a meat lover,  I love getting meat and eggs from my friends farm. This beet recipe is from Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone by Deborah . . .

Shira Sela

I recently discovered the work of illustrator and designer Shira Sela.  Her illustrations are magical…I love the muted tones. I mailed a ‘thank you’ gift package to Lily of Little Birds for illustrating the banner for my new blog which is coming really soon. I included Happy Moment. I love when I receive an item from Etsy that has so much care and love put in to the packaging. She is seriously so sweet. She even included a 4×6 of  Human Nature  which I absolutely adore. If you’re wondering why I sent Lily a package its because she was gracious enough to design my banner free of charge. She asked for a smile. It’s very uncommon to find people as special as Lily. I am happy that people like her still exist. Also, I’m glad that somehow I often cross paths with people like her. It was so . . .

Happy Birthday Sis…

Is Solace anywhere more comforting than in the arms of a sister….Alice Walker

Today my sister is thirty three. I vividly remember the endless hours we spent playing. And now she’s all grown up with a little family. When I think back to our years growing up together, I feel blessed to have had such an amazing older sister. She truly is the best gift my parents have ever given me. I’m eternally grateful for all the joy that lives between us. This song is for you sis.
